Why I want to be an academician?
Choosing a career path is one of the most significant decisions we make in life. For me, the journey to becoming an academician was driven by a blend of personal experiences, professional growth, and a passion for knowledge dissemination. Here’s why I embarked on this fulfilling journey.
Early Influences and Education
My academic journey began with a deep-rooted curiosity and a love for learning. I graduated from Gazi University Faculty of Pharmacy in 1998, where my interest in clinical pharmacy was solidified. This foundation paved the way for further studies, culminating in an MSc in Molecular Genetics and a PhD in Clinical Pharmacy.
Professional Experience
My professional career started as a community pharmacist, followed by a role as a consultant in Medical Devices CE Certification at the European Union Business Development Center in Turkey. In 2006, I became the chief pharmacist at Gaziantep University Oncology Hospital, where I established Turkey’s first Central Chemotherapy Drug Preparation Unit. This experience honed my expertise in oncology pharmacy and reinforced my commitment to advancing patient care.
Academic Contributions
In 2015, I transitioned into academia, lecturing on Oncology Pharmacy and Nutritional Support Pharmacy at TRNC Near East University Faculty of Pharmacy. My roles have expanded over the years, including positions as a visiting lecturer at multiple universities and currently as a full-time faculty member and Vice Dean at Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Pharmacy. Additionally, I direct the CIU Drug Information Center and the CIU Alumni Communication and Career Development Center.
Leadership and Innovation
My leadership roles include founding the Turkish Oncology Pharmacists Association (TOPA) and serving as its Chairman. I also co-founded the Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Hospital Pharmacists Association (AAMEHP). These positions reflect my commitment to enhancing the professional standards and educational opportunities for pharmacists globally.
Recognitions and Awards
Throughout my career, I have received several accolades, including the “2010 Turkish Pharmacists’ Chamber Academy Jury Special Award” and the “Distinguished Graduate Award” from Gazi University Faculty of Pharmacy. These honors recognize my contributions to pharmacy and my efforts in promoting scientific research and education.
Passion for Teaching and Research
My passion for teaching is intertwined with my dedication to research. My work at CIU involves mentoring students, conducting research, and publishing in both domestic and international journals. I am particularly proud of organizing the first and only “Antineoplastic Drug Preparation Techniques and Safe Room Management” certified training in Turkey and TRNC, which highlights my commitment to continuous education in oncology pharmacy.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
In addition to my academic pursuits, I am passionate about innovation and entrepreneurship. My ongoing projects, including establishing the firm 'Drug Detectives' and developing the RXUndeal project, reflect my drive to create impactful solutions in the pharmaceutical field. 'Drug Detectives,' in particular, aims to provide NAPLEX preparation content, blending clinical pharmacy skills with engaging educational materials. This entrepreneurial spirit complements my academic endeavors, allowing me to contribute to the field in diverse and meaningful ways.
Technological Integration in Education
The integration of technology in education is a frontier I am excited to explore. Using Meta Quest 3 to create virtual classrooms for teaching clinical pharmacy courses is a testament to my commitment to leveraging technology to enhance learning experiences. This innovative approach not only makes education more accessible but also engages students in a more interactive and immersive manner.
Storytelling and Education
Creating engaging and relatable educational content is another aspect of my academic journey. By weaving educational content into compelling narratives, I aim to make learning more enjoyable and effective for students.
Conclusion
My journey to becoming an academician has been shaped by a blend of clinical expertise, research, and a deep-seated passion for teaching. From my early days as a pharmacist to my current roles in academia and leadership, each step has reinforced my desire to contribute to the field of pharmacy. I look forward to continuing this journey, inspiring future generations, and advancing the profession through innovation and education.
